Earlier catalogues and scholarly studies are essential sources for documenting Andreou’s work. They preserve titles, dates, measurements, and collection statements, often alongside photographs and critical texts. Reading them together also requires attention to the different ways in which they arrange and number works.
An earlier sculpture catalogue
The 1975 volume Andréou: 40 ans de sculpture credits Michèle Dubreucq with its text, biography, and bibliography. It contains a numbered sculpture catalogue arranged by year. The pages examined record titles, measurements, collection information, and references to illustrations.1
The book uses separate numbers for catalogue entries and illustrations. On page 183, for example, the caption for Voyage dans le cœur gives catalogue number 403 alongside illustration numbers 169–171. A reference to an illustration and a reference to a catalogue entry therefore need to be distinguished.1
Mortaki’s dissertation
Sapfo A. Mortaki’s 2010 doctoral dissertation includes substantial documentation of Andreou’s work. Its appendix contains chronological and thematic sculpture lists, each numbered from 1 to 727, as well as photographic sections with their own numbering. These include sculpture and painting from the artist’s collection and works donated to the library at La Ville-du-Bois. The lists overlap, so their entry counts cannot be added together to establish the total number of Andreou’s works.2
A reference to earlier painting research
The bibliography in Femme · Femmes: Peintures (1997) lists a painting catalogue raisonné by Sophia Kazazi under 1987. The Archive has not yet located the original document, so its form, scope, and completion remain unverified. The short essay retrieved from Antinor’s 1987 exhibition does not resolve that reference.3
References in the Archive
The Archive’s stable identifiers belong to its own artwork records. Numbers assigned by an earlier author belong to that publication. To trace a reference, a reader needs the publication, relevant section, printed page, and catalogue or illustration number.
Connecting an earlier entry to an Archive record requires comparison of photographs, measurements, dates, and documented history. A shared title is only a starting point. Collection statements must also be read in their historical context, with present ownership verified separately.
The Archive is working towards a critically documented catalogue raisonné. A full comparison with these earlier catalogues remains to be completed.
