Exhibitions

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Constantine Andreou exhibited sculpture, painting, prints, and works on paper in Europe and beyond. His work appeared in independent gallery exhibitions and major retrospectives, as well as in the Paris salons and international exhibitions that shaped postwar modern art. A published curatorial account records approximately eighty solo and 150 group exhibitions. The Constantine Andreou Archive is rebuilding that history from catalogues, institutional archives, contemporary press, and surviving exhibition material. The chronology below is incomplete. It includes exhibitions whose names and locations can presently be stated with confidence, while records that still contain unresolved transcription errors remain under review.

Individual exhibitions and retrospectives

1950s

  • 1951 – Galerie de La Boétie, Paris. Andreou’s first documented independent gallery exhibition in Paris.
  • 1954 – Galerie Simone Badinier, Paris. Jean Cocteau encountered Andreou’s work at this exhibition and told him that he would become one of the greats.
  • 1954 – Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, São Paulo, and Centre des États-Unis, Rio de Janeiro. These exhibitions brought his work back to Brazil, where he had been born.
  • 1955 – Galerie du Palais-Royal, Paris.
  • 1956 – Chez Marc Vaux, Paris.
  • 1958 – Galerie Monique de Groote, Brussels; Galerie Contacts, Liège; and Galerie Abienti, São Paulo.
  • 1959 – Retrospective at the home of Dr Paul Gay, Saint-Jeoire-en-Faucigny.
  • 1959 – Galerie Landwerlin, Strasbourg; Galerie Gérard Mourgue, Paris; and Galerie Numaga, La Chaux-de-Fonds. The contemporary 1962 Andreou chronology prints the Strasbourg gallery’s name as “Lanwerlin”.
  • 1959 – Galerie d’Art, Amiens, and Galerie Arlet, Monaco.

1960s and 1970s

  • 1961 – Galerie Pierre Domec, Paris, 5 May–1 June. The exhibition presented Andreou’s sculpture with a catalogue text by René de Solier.
  • 1961 – Lunds konsthall, Lund, Sweden. A later copied chronology mistakenly placed this exhibition in Malmö.
  • 1964 – Galerie La Hune, Paris (prints), and Maison d’Alsace, Mulhouse.
  • 1966 – Galerie R. Nidrecourt, Paris, 8 March–15 April. Andreou exhibited painting, sculpture, and prints; Pierre Cabanne wrote the catalogue preface.
  • 1967 – Hilton Gallery, Athens. Contemporary Greek press described this as Andreou’s first solo exhibition in Greece.
  • 1968 – Galerie La Demeure, Paris.
  • 1969 – Salle municipale des fêtes, Châlons-sur-Marne; Galerie La Muraille, Paris; and Galerie Suzy Langlois, Paris.
  • 1970 – Maison de la Culture de Bourges, 3 March–13 April. A retrospective of sculpture, drawings, gouaches, and prints made between 1945 and 1970.
  • 1970 – Galerie Simone Badinier, Paris, and Galerie du Fleuve, Bordeaux.

  • 1982 – Salon d’Automne, Paris. Andreou was given a retrospective room and chaired the Salon’s sculpture section.
  • 1982 – Elpida Gallery, Athens.

  • 1987 – Antinor Gallery, Athens, 23 November–12 December. An exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture, accompanied by a catalogue with texts by Sophia Kazazi and Michalis Bourboulis. Exhibition invitation (Teloglion); catalogue (Teloglion).
  • 1988 – Salon de Cholet. Andreou was given a dedicated room and presented as guest of honour.
  • 1990 – Salon de Rueil-Malmaison. Andreou was presented as guest of honour.
  • 1991 – Château du Logis, Brécey. The family-held printed bibliography identifies B. Tréhet’s Andréou des Cyclades au Cosmos, une dualité créatrice as the catalogue of this exhibition.
  • 1991 – Torigny-sur-Vire, France. Andreou was presented as guest of honour; the exact institution remains under review.
  • 1992 – Βαφοπούλειο Πνευματικό Κέντρο (Vafopoulio Cultural Centre), Thessaloniki. A retrospective of painting from 1950 to 1992.
  • 1992 – Salon d’Antony. Andreou was presented as guest of honour.
  • 1992 – Gonesse, France. A surviving printed chronology records a retrospective presented in a European Common Market context, with Andreou as guest of honour; the exact exhibition title remains under review.
  • 1993 – Galerie Colette Dubois, Paris.
  • 1994 – Ειρμός (Eirmos) Gallery, Thessaloniki. Painting and prints.
  • 1995 – Centre culturel, Les Clayes-sous-Bois.
  • 1995 – Salon de la Peinture à l’Eau, Paris. Andreou was given a dedicated room and presented as guest of honour.
  • 1995 – Guerrier Andréou, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Meudon, Orangerie du château. A two-artist exhibition of paintings by Raymond Guerrier and sculptures by Andreou.
  • 1995 – Musée de Saint-Pol-de-Léon, Brittany.
  • 1998 – Chez Éric Chaix, Paris.
  • 1998 – Πινακοθήκη Δήμου Αθηναίων (Municipal Gallery of Athens). A major retrospective accompanied by a substantial catalogue.
  • 1998 – La rencontre des arts (The Meeting of the Arts), La Ville-du-Bois. The municipal library received Andreou’s name the following year.
  • 1999 – Larnaca, Cyprus. Retrospective exhibition; the exact venue and dates remain under review.

  • 2004 – Ανδρέου (Andreou), Τελλόγλειο Ίδρυμα Τεχνών Α.Π.Θ. (Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). The retrospective brought together 205 works executed using welded brass and was accompanied by a catalogue.
  • 2005 – Bistrot Paris-Athènes, Institut français de Grèce, Athens.

Group and international exhibitions

  • 1942 – Πανελλήνια Έκθεση (Panhellenic Exhibition), Athens. Andreou’s unconventional naturalism prompted public debate, and his work was defended by Memos Makris, Giannis Miliadis, and Nikos Nikolaou.
  • 1946 – Greek Pavilion, Cité Universitaire, Paris. His first documented Paris appearance was a group exhibition of Greek artists, not a solo exhibition.
  • 1947 – Group exhibition of young Greek artists living and studying in Paris, and the Salon des Tuileries.
  • From 1948 – Salon d’Automne, Paris. Andreou exhibited there repeatedly as a member; documented years include 1948, 1949, 1951, 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1988.
  • 1952 – 4e Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, Musée Rodin, Paris.
  • 1953 – Sept sculpteurs grecs de Paris (Seven Greek Sculptors of Paris), Petit Palais, Paris, 6 May–7 June. Andreou exhibited with Apartis, Costi, Coulentianos, Philolaos, Raftopoulou, and Valsamis.
  • 1953 – Antwerp Biennale.
  • 1955 – International exhibition in the Netherlands and an invited presentation at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. The exact title and venue of the Dutch exhibition remain under review.
  • 1956 – Première Exposition internationale de la sculpture contemporaine (First International Exhibition of Contemporary Sculpture), Musée Rodin, Paris, 2 June–14 July.
  • 1959 – 11e Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, Musée Rodin, Paris, 16 May–8 June.
  • 1960 – École de Paris: peintures, dessins, sculptures, Galerie Landwerlin, Strasbourg, through 30 September. Andreou exhibited with Camille Hilaire and Jean-Jacques Morvan.
  • 1961 – Deuxième Exposition internationale de sculpture contemporaine (Second International Exhibition of Contemporary Sculpture), Musée Rodin, Paris, 30 June–15 October.
  • 1962 – Peintres et sculpteurs grecs de Paris (Greek Painters and Sculptors of Paris), Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 10 January–4 February. The exhibition brought together forty-six Greek artists working in Paris.
  • 1963 – 5th International Exhibition of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 9 June–15 September.
  • 1966 – XXXIII Esposizione Biennale Internazionale d’Arte (33rd Venice Biennale). Andreou and Clearchos Loukopoulos represented Greece in the national presentation; Tonis Spiteris served as commissioner.
  • 1975 – Padua Biennale.
  • 1983 – Salon d’Automne: de Cézanne à Matisse, Grand Palais, Paris, 14 October–7 November.

  • 2009 – Κώστας Ανδρέου (1917–2007), Γλύπτης, Ζωγράφος, Χαράκτης: Post mortem (Kostas Andreou (1917–2007), Sculptor, Painter, Printmaker: Post mortem), Ίδρυμα Ευγενίδου (Eugenides Foundation), Athens, 8–26 April. The retrospective presented approximately sixty works.
  • 2012 – Κώστας Ανδρέου: ο γλύπτης, ο ζωγράφος, ο χαράκτης (Kostas Andreou: The Sculptor, the Painter, the Printmaker), Μουσείο Νεοελληνικής Τέχνης Δήμου Ρόδου (Museum of Modern Greek Art of the Municipality of Rhodes), 6 June–31 July. The retrospective formed part of the fiftieth-anniversary programme of the Gallery of Rhodes.
  • 2013 – Sculptures et peintures de Constantin Andréou (Sculptures and Paintings by Constantin Andreou), Bibliothèque Constantin Andréou, La Ville-du-Bois, 21 September. A one-day heritage display.

  • 2021 – Αφιέρωμα στον Κώστα Ανδρέου (Tribute to Kostas Andreou), Aegina, 3–24 September. The 12th Aegina Fistiki Fest presented two parallel exhibitions: painting at the Ιστορικό και Λαογραφικό Μουσείο Δήμου Αίγινας (Historical and Folklore Museum of Aegina) and sculpture at the Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αίγινας (Archaeological Museum of Aegina) at Kolona.
  • 2022 – Saudade-Nostos: The Roots of Costas Andreou, an Artist of the World, Casa do Brasil, Athens, 9–30 June.
  • 2022–present – Maison culturelle des Joncs Marins, La Ville-du-Bois. A dedicated room for the municipality’s Andreou collection opened on 21 June 2022 as a permanent display, rather than a temporary exhibition.

This chronology has been assembled from exhibition catalogues, institutional records, contemporary press, and a family-held printed chronology. Venue names and exhibition titles have been normalised only where documentary evidence supports the correction; ambiguous entries remain under review.
